Game Design Challenge Workshop

Game Design Challenge Workshop

I developed the Game Design Challenge, an interactive workshop to foster game-infused innovation and creativity for any organization. Participants use a structured yet flexible approach, incorporating design elements through dice rolls to quickly build small game experiences, emphasizing rapid prototyping, iterative design, and play-testing.
More Details

Activity Overview: The Game Design Challenge is an interactive activity I created to encourage creativity and problem-solving through game design. Participants use a worksheet and dice rolls to generate elements (topics, verbs, themes, adjectives) that form the basis of their game concept.

Objective: To create a small game using the given design elements within a set time frame, fostering skills in rapid prototyping, iterative development, and creative thinking.

Materials Needed:

  • Dice or a dice app
  • Timer or timer app
  • Game Design Challenge Instructions and Worksheet
  • Various household items for game creation (pens, paper, craft items, toys, old game pieces, etc.)

Process:

  1. Idea Generation: Roll the dice to determine game elements like topics, verbs, themes, and adjectives to inspire the game design.
  2. Game Design Development: Utilize the Game Design Worksheet to outline the game's title, story/message, goal/win condition, materials, and rules of play.
  3. Prototyping and Playtesting: Create a prototype using available materials and conduct play-testing sessions to refine the game mechanics and rules.

Educational Value: This challenge teaches participants about ideation and creative problem solving using the game design process, including brainstorming, prototyping, and play-testing, while encouraging innovative thinking and design skills. It's adaptable for various age groups and skill levels, making it a versatile tool for educational settings.

Creator’s Reflection: Designed to be both fun and educational, this activity demystifies the game design process and encourages participants to think creatively within constraints, reflecting real-world design challenges.
